GARNET IDENTITY FEDERATION (GIF)
Established in October 2022, the GARNET Identity Federation (GIF) plays a pivotal role in facilitating secure and reliable access to resources, including services and content, for member institutions across the GARNET Network, as well as other data networks regionally and globally.
To become part of the GARNET Identity Federation, institutions are required to apply by downloading and filling in the designated form, specifying their role as either an Identity Provider (IdP) or a Service Provider (SP).
It is important to note that only GARNET member institutions are eligible to join GIF as Identity Providers (IdPs). On the other hand, institutions, organizations, or companies seeking to participate as a Service Provider (SP) in GIF do not need to be GARNET members.
Access to federated resources through GARNET is governed by the comprehensive GARNET Identity Federation Policy, while metadata registration within GIF is regulated by the GIF Metadata Registration Practice Statement.
Membership in GARNET is exclusively open to Research and Educational institutions accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) or those operating under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI). Other institutions, including research hospitals and libraries, conducting research and education as part of their mandate, may subscribe to GARNET membership. Admission is subject to approval by the GARNET Board of Directors.
Eduroam is an Authentication and Authorization Infrastructure (AAI) based on RADIUS or RadSEC. The Technology Profile for eduroam under the GARNET Identity Federation can be accessed here.
SAML WebSSO: The SAML V2.0 Web Browser SSO Profile defines a standard that enables Identity Providers and relying parties to create and use web Single Sign On services using SAML Requirements. The SAML WebSSO Technology Profile for the GARNET Identity Federation (GIF) can be accessed here.
